So you have booked a fall photo session, now what? If you are like most people, you will be scrambling with what to wear – digging through closets to find anything that might coordinate well together. And then of course, make that last-minute trip to the store. Never fear, Tompt Photography is here! Here are some tips on what to wear for a fall photo session: 1. Stay away from white and black. White: While white will provide some contrast to the colors behind you, white is the color that will be most likely to get overexposed during a photoshoot. It also tends to wash out your skin – especially if you have lighter skin – like me! Some pops of white in your clothing is OK, but try to stay away from wearing an all-white shirt. White can be overpowering in an image and is not slimming. There are plenty of other colors to wear that will help the fall colors pop! Black: While black is the color to wear to make you look “slender,” try to avoid it in photoshoots. Not just a rule for fall, but black can actually make your skin looked aged – any time of year. It can make any dark circles under your eyes more pronounced. The dark color can reflect back up on your face and that is the opposite of what we want in pictures! If you want to wear a darker color, navy is the better option. 2. Stick with more earthly tones Of course, the best option is to stick with earthly tones. We all know those typical fall colors - they come out in the store right around fall time. Maroon, brown, navy, forest green – those are the bread and butter when it comes to fall photoshoot clothing. Deep, rich colors are the way to go! 3. Don’t worry about a “Uniform” Not everything needs to be completely “matchy-matchy.” As long as you have the same tones in the clothing you choose to wear, your photos will most likely come out looking great! On the opposite end, don’t throw in every color in the book - you do want to have some coordination. Try to stick with a couple colors. 4. Keep in Simple While patterns add some great dimension to photos – make sure not to go wild! Sometimes, it is nice to have some solids and some patterns to break up the picture, but make sure not to have too many as it can be distracting. Also, stay away from flashy clothing, jewelry, or other designs that could be distracting. We want to focus on YOU in the picture, so keep it simple. 5. Add in those accessories A scarf never hurt anyone! Don’t be afraid to add in some accessories. A nice pop of color in a hat or some plaid in a scarf – those things scream fall. Maybe it is late fall and you want to add some mittens? Accessories can add the perfect amount of character and personality to your photos! Lets take a look at some examples below! In this example, the Nicklay family did a fabulous job using the navy tone! They are all wearing some variation of the color, but they are not all the same, which makes for some great contrast! You can even see some patterns in there that break things up. In the Hynes family session, I love that Lindsey added a pop of color with her scarf - which made it stand out with the leaves. Also, they dressed baby Berkeley in a brighter blue – which made her stand out as well! Because, of course, babies are always supposed to be the center of attention! 😊 In this photo, Dan wore a nice patterned shirt, and Aubrey kept it simple. She also matched Sadie a bit! The MacDonald’s are a great example of coordinating for a very large group! They all kept it simple and stuck with two colors – navy and white. Even though there were different tones of navy and some patterns, it all ties together without being too overwhelming. The Tesdall family stuck with navy and red – two colors. They have some solids, stripes, and patterns to break things up. Plus, it really makes them pop out from the fall leaves behind them. There are a lot of choices when it comes to what to wear in your fall photoshoot…but don’t forget about another BIG factor - wear what looks good on you and what you feel comfortable in! Lets be honest, if we aren’t comfortable and don’t feel good in our own skin, it is likely to show through into your photographs. So as you look for those perfect outfits, keep these tips in mind and don’t worry – you will look great!
